Dee Burrell wrote a powerful piece recently on her Substack of the same name, Dee Burrell, explaining why being a “good girl” holds us back from our potential in her article Good Girls Don’t Change the World.
In that luxurious space between Christmas and New Year’s, I watched episodes of the popular 1950s show Father Knows Best. For those unfamiliar with it, it’s quite funny and about a traditional 1950s family. I’m amazed how some things haven’t changed about raising children. I was also surprised to see how much influence the mother had during this time period. Although she’s a “trad wife,” she runs the show, so to speak.
However, my issue with the show is how the youngest daughter, Kathy, is treated. She is patted on the head and told to “be a good girl” whenever she wants something or wants to do something. She’s constantly dismissed and told to run off and play. This highlights the broader issue of how young girls are often treated in family dynamics. As an outsider, it’s easy to see why we could have developed the thought that being “good” was important.
Vibe: Let’s not let history repeat itself
Alex Coupe writes her Substack, Thrive from 45, where subscribers can “find practical insights and empowering stories on health, wellness, and resilience for women in midlife.”
If you’ve seen a difference between what you receive for pain medicine versus your male counterparts, you’re not making it up. There are differences between us, and I’ve seen them firsthand between my husband and me during the 24 years we’ve been married.
So often, women are underprescribed pain medicine. The United States made one advancement recently by developing new guidelines around pain management during IUD insertion, suggesting that doctors now counsel women on pain management during the procedure.
Read Alex’s article to learn more about this gender bias.

In health,
Thanks for highlighting disordered eating in January, such a good time to focus on building a healthy relationship with food/bodies.

4. Hi! Much of my work is dedicated to the field of disordered eating. I am a licensed psychologist and certified eating disorder specialist. I am also a mom, which occupies a ton of mental energy, so I write about that too. I just published a piece about both of my roles—navigating my son’s cleft palate surgery and how that has affected my therapeutic work.
